About Me

Photo Credit - Lauren Oliver Photography

Kim's love for art grew from a seed planted by a beloved art teacher in a sun filled art room at her elementary school. That teacher submitted one of Kim's drawings to an art competition in Japan which resulted in a first place award at the age of seven. "I've never really cared about winning competitions since then but I loved how excited my teacher was and her belief in me just got me going. I wish every kid got that kind of attention and encouragement."  At a young age, she moved with her family to Montana and often relied on this love of art to ground her in her environment.  "I can't remember a time that I didn't spend part of my day thinking of, dreaming about or making some type of art that could help me connect to other people around me." Kim now draws a great deal of inspiration from the beauty of the Northwest. She primarily works in the mediums of acrylic, pastel, charcoal and pencil on birch wood panels. As a happy wife and mother of three, her work often is influenced by the dynamics of relationship as well as a sense of place and connection. "Whether its a rocky landscape or an interesting face in a crowd, I paint scenes that reflect the relationship and connection to others, ideas, places and things we all hold dear. After all, relationship is where we find all the meaning in our lives and it is that connection that keeps us in harmony with each other."

Anderson's interest in art expression mainly is focused on abstract and contemporary work.  She is a visual artist who was raised in Montana and currently lives in Gig Harbor, WA. Kim studied under Maryann Bonjorni at the University of Montana and although she regretfully majored in and received a degree in something else, her love for art remained a constant priority.

Process and Materials

"I adore mess.  I thrive in it.  I've always been the kid with stuff all over the floor and pinned to the walls.  My mind loves a bit of clutter in my creative space.  Good for creativity but not always great for the other people in my life!  So, in order to save them from my lack of traditional organizational convention, I have a space that is all my own and it allows me to throw ideas around...literally.  I believe this comes through in my art.  I hate to limit my subject matter as much as I hate to limit my materials and methods.  The one constant is my love of working on wood panels.  The surface allows for acrylic, pencil, pastel, and variety of varnishes and oil many great things! Birch wood panels allow for me to use strong smooth paint strokes like seen in my mountain ranges but the panels can also support more textural mixed media as you can see in some of my abstract pieces.

The discovery of my main "canvas" has lead to another other staple in my work that I use often (but not always)...hand pressed image transfer.  All the images I use are from my own photography and I manipulate the images in a way that allows me to transfer them onto a wood panel and apply paint and/or other materials over top, around and even underneath to add layers on texture and interest.  The process involves some planning and time but mostly, it allows me to highlight an idea by collaging layers of related colors, imagery, or even words that come together in a celebration of the subject matter.  I hope you enjoy looking over my work. Contact me if you have any questions or if you are interested in learning about possible commissions."
